Living in Bryan-College Station


In my last blog post I talked a little about what it’s like to live in “Aggieland”. The impact our university has on the twin cities is undeniable; Bryan-College Station would not look anything like it does today if it weren’t for Texas A&M. These towns have a lot to offer outside of the university!

Local Parks & Outdoors


Bryan-College Station has PLENTY of spaces to enjoy the outdoors. The combined parks and recreation departments for the City of College Station and the City of Bryan have 50+ parks and trails listed on their websites. They also have pools for hours of summer activities and fun, facilities for rentals for events, and they run year-round programs for children, adults and seniors.

Lake Somerville is a Texas Parks & Wildlife park about 40 minutes from Bryan-College Station and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It offers trails for hiking and mountain biking; state park access with boat ramps, water activities and camping.

Gibbons Creek reservoir is a 15-20 minute drive from Bryan-College Station and is operated by the Texas Municipal Power Agency. Gibbons Creek offers access to a boat ramp, fishing and watersports as well as hiking and camping.

Do you like golf? Because Bryan-College Station has that too! Local courses include; Miramont, Pebble Creek, Bryan Municipal, Traditions, Briarcrest and Texas A&M University.

Arts & Entertainment

Driving to larger cities for Arts & Entertainment has become a thing of the past for Bryan-College Station residents, we have no shortage of amazing shows to take in right here at home.

MSC OPAS brings professional theater, music and dance performances to the stage right here on the campus of Texas A&M. In addition, TAMU department of music activities includes choral activities, university bands and orchestra has local performances throughout the year. Check with the MSC Box Office for upcoming shows.

The Brazos Valley Chorale and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra are both made up of very talented locals who perform at area events and provide their own concerts throughout the year.

The Starlight Music Series will bring shows to the Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater each year in the late spring/early summer. These shows are outdoors and have a very relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.


Family Friendly Festivities


I mentioned that the local Parks offices offer programs year-round for the whole family, but there are also many more great activities for the whole family.

There are museums and libraries(and lots of them). The George Bush Library offers an amazing Presidential Library as well as rotating exhibits. The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History offers education exhibits and workshops and camps throughout the year. The Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley offers exhibits and programs targeting children 12 and under. The Museum of the American GI has military exhibits and restored vehicles as well as special events and historical re-enactments. The Bryan-College Station Public Library System offers so much more than the opportunity to borrow books, check out their events calendar to see what they offer.

There are so many options for family-friendly entertainment. Downtown Bryan hosts First Friday each month with musicians and artists performing throughout the evening. Food trucks and entertainment at the Palace Theater encourage residents to enjoy what downtown Bryan has to offer. Grand Station Entertainment offering Bowling, Bumper Cars, Mini Golf, an Arcade and more and is a great location to have a group of friends get together or just enjoy some family fun. In November and December Santa’s Wonderland comes to life in South College Station and is a display of lights NOT to be missed. You can see the lights from a hayride through Santa’s Wonderland and then visit Santa’s Town for more entertainment and refreshments. Bryan-College Station also has two large movie theaters; Bryan Premier Cinema and Cinemark Movies in College Station.

Adult Activities


Even though Bryan-College Station is an area known to have plenty of bars and attractions for college students there is no shortage of venues suited for those who are no longer students.

There are several area wineries & vineyards each offering their own unique experiences and events: Messina Hof Winery and Resort, Peach Creek Vineyards and Perrine Winery.

There are also a couple of local breweries that cater to a wide range of craft beer enthusiasts: New Republic Brewing and Blackwater Draw Brewing.

  We don't usually get "real" Winters in this area. If we dip below freezing over night it's usually just one night here & there during the Winter months. We rarely see snow and can go years without the worry of ice on the roads. This year is NOT that year. Creating your Home Office In recent months many (if not most) of us have found ourselves working much more from home. The fact is that none of us really knows if we might need to be able to work from home again in the future (ie. the Fall), but there are a host of reasons why anyone could need to work from home. There are definitely some pros and cons to working from home. There are also things that we can do to make the most of the pros & minimize the cons to make for an effective work day at home. Of course, having the office to actually GO to is nice. I don't even use a dedicated "office" at my office. I use the open spaces and love interacting with my coworkers.
